The
V.J.T. Institute first started functioning on 1st Sept 1888
in the Old Elphinstone college building at Byculla with 2 department
known as the 'Ripon Textile School' and 'Sir J.J. School of
Mechanical Engineering'. The Institute was born out of an urgent
need to create a new cadre of technical personnel who would
reduce dependence on foreign technical personnel.
Degree
courses in VJTI began in 1946 and Post graduate courses in 1952.
The institute presently runs over 25 courses in different field
of specialization in degree and diploma streams. Today VJTI
also runs doctoral programmes. Around 3300 students study on
the campus and the annual intake is 950. The Institute boasts
of having provided the industrial, research, managerial and
academic world with skilled technical manpower that are comparable
with the best in India and the world. Notable among these are
Shri Mohanlal Sukhadia, Shri Anil Kakodkar, Shri Babubhai Chinai,
Shri Pratap Bhogilal, Shri Fakirji Bharucha, Shri P.B.Advani,
Shri Jayant Patil, Shri Chhagan Bhujbal and several other luminaries
of the industrial and managerial world who have left an indelible
mark on the industrial and economic scenario with their technical
and managerial prowess, vision and commitment. Many current
top level technocrats, entrepreneurs, bureaucrats and managers
have also been trained in this institute. In all over 25,500
diploma holders, over 15,500 graduates and over 2200 post graduates
have been trained on this campus.
The
VJTI Alumni association was formed on 10th March 1944 and was
called 'The Old Boys' Association'. It was later rechristened
'VJTI Alumni Association'. The association endeavours to establish
an intimate contact between the past and present students of
the institute and the staff. It strives to create an everlasting
bond between the institute and the alumni by inviting them to
participate in various activities of the institute like curriculum
development, undertaking of joint research and consultancy projects,
development of centres of excellence in emerging areas of technology,
student mentoring, guest lectures, laboratory and infrastructure
development. The Alumni association has its own office within
the institute premises where all information relating to the
alumni will be made available.
The
Alumni meet to be held on 24th December 2006 in the institute
is the first of its kind after the institute was granted autonomy
in June 2004. All alumni are invited to visit the campus and
take a walk down memory lane and relive the times spent on the
campus. The Director of the institute will address the alumni
and inform them of the growth and progress of the institute
over the past several years and of the future goals of the institute.
This event would be a special one for the Batch of 81 (degree,
diploma, post graduate and post diploma) who celebrate 25 years
of passing out from the institute. The alumni meet would henceforth
be made an annual event to be held in the 4th week of December.
