The department had its origin in the need for engineers to be proficient in Basic English, Economics and Management.

The department has been functioning independently since 1973. The department conducts courses for both degree and diploma students in Communication Skills, Economics, Management and Humanities.

The department also conducts a number of activities of the institute. The administrative activities include the conduction of class elections, co-curricular activities for diploma students and preparing of reports. The department also actively participates in social and extracurricular activities including the annual magazine and the institutes’ cultural and technical festivals.
