VJTI Mumbai, established in 1887 as the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute, has been a trailblazer in India's engineering education, research, and training landscape. Prior to independence, VJTI played a crucial role in fostering industrial development across united India. Following independence, it was instrumental in the establishment of prestigious institutions like the IITs and RECs, contributing significantly to the nation's technological advancement.

In 1997, VJTI underwent a name change to Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute, in tribute to the mother of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.

History

The Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) has a rich and illustrious history that spans over a century. Here's an elaboration

Established in 1887 according to the VJTI Memorandum of Association, VJTI commenced its journey with two departments: the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Ripon Textile School. It expanded over the years, adding departments such as Electrical Engineering (1903), Technical & Applied Chemistry (1906), and Sanitary Engineering (1913). Recognized as the Central Technological Institute of Bombay Province in 1913, VJTI was initially located in Byculla, housed in a building donated by Sir Dinshaw Maneckji Petit.

Following the conclusion of the First World War in 1923, the Institute relocated to its current campus in Matunga. Apart from Sir Petit's contribution, generous grants from the Government and the Bombay Mill Owners’ Association facilitated this move. In 1931, a new block featuring northern light roof construction was constructed to accommodate textile machinery and equipment, acquired through the support of Sir Ness Wadia.

In the late 1940s, VJTI introduced bachelor degree programs in Textile, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering. It played a crucial role in establishing the IITs during the 1950s, with faculty members like Prof. Kelkar and Prof. SenGupto contributing significantly. Affiliated with the University of Bombay, VJTI enjoyed de facto autonomy until 1960. In 1997, it was renamed Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute.

Director's Message

Welcome to Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI), an Autonomous Institute of the Government of Maharashtra, established in 1887. VJTI excels in “Global Technological Excellence” with top-tier infrastructure, nine Undergraduate Programs, numerous Postgraduate and Ph.D. programs. With over 4000 students and 150 faculty members, VJTI consistently achieves outstanding academic results within the University of Mumbai, fostering a positive and student-centered learning environment.
